Welcome to the Dakota Society Sons of the American Revolution
The Dakota Society Sons of the American Revolution (DSSAR) is a community of individuals dedicated to honoring the spirit of our ancestors who fought for liberty and independence during the American Revolution.
As a 501(c)(3) volunteer organization, the DSSAR aims to preserve historic documents and artifacts, support public education initiatives, and inspire future generations to uphold the values that define our nation.
About the Sons of the American Revolution
The Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) was incorporated on January 17, 1890, in Connecticut and later chartered by the United States Congress on June 9, 1906. Prior to this date, there were state societies that were formed in the 1890’s. These were led by the Sons of Revolutionary Sires, organized on July 4, 1876, in San Francisco at a time when the country was celebrating the centennial of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. In 1889, a group of men in the San Francisco area, who were descendants of patriots involved in the American Revolution, created the SAR. Their objective was to have a fraternal and civic society to salute those men and women who pledged their lives, fortunes and honor to battle for independence from Great Britain.
The SAR was formed on April 19, 1889, and the first Congress of the National Society was held in Louisville, Kentucky on April 30, 1889, which was the 100th anniversary of George Washington’s taking of the oath of office of President of the United States.
The society is a volunteer historical, non-political, educational, and patriotic non-profit organization that seeks to maintain and extend the institutions of American freedom. We do this by perpetuating the stories of patriotism, courage, sacrifice of our forefathers. The SAR is dedicated to promoting and preserving American history, as well as teaching American history to future generations.
We strive to keep patriotism and the memory of our Revolutionary War heritage alive, including the legacy of our ancestor’s accomplishments including freedom, representative government and a constitutional Bill of Rights.
